Detection of the new Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2

The virus causing the current coronavirus outbreak is called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 is called COVID-19 ("CO" corona, "VI" virus, "D" disease, "19" indicates the year of the virus).

Patients with COVID-19 mainly have mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath. Some patients progress to bilateral pneumonia, multiple organ failure and, in some cases, death.

The ANALAB laboratory offers a qualitative PCR detection test which amplifies the viral RNA of SARS-CoV-2. This test identifies the 3 different target genes (E gene, RdRP gene and N gene) in accordance with numerous international protocols (WHO). The test is performed on a nasopharyngeal smear which must comply with the recommendations to avoid false negatives.

In the case of respiratory symptoms with a negative SARS-CoV-2 result, ANALAB offers a reflex test for the additional detection by PCR of influenza A / B and RSV. On request, the reflex test can be replaced by a complete respiratory panel, which identifies numerous acute respiratory agents (PCR multiplex Respiratory Panel), from the same nasopharyngeal sample.

To contain the infection please follow the updated instructions from the cantonal health authorities and the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP)
